Rusty and the Driftwoods (Rainbo)

Nice garage record from the California group Rusty and the Driftwoods. It was released on Rainbow Records in early 1966. Rusty Straughn is the writer of both songs "Helpless" and "Cold Cold Shot".

  3. I love this record. First heard it in 1976 when I became Rusty's bandmate in another band named Thrill in Davis, California. Although I don't know the other members of Rusty and the Driftwoods, Byrd "Rusty" Straughn (who I knew as "The Byrd Man") was also my idol, roommate and dear friend who passed away in 2001. I have some of his other recordings, mostly unfinished demos, if anybody's interested.

    1. My name is Luis Bernal Jr. I was a member of the Driftwoods from 1963 to 1966. I first met Rusty when he was 13 years old and I was 17 years old. We were practically brother and constant companions until December 1966 when I left the band in order to enter the US Army and as fate would have it, I spent a year in Vietnam with the 4th Infantry Division. I have a long history with Rusty
I am now 74-year-old, and I live in Las Vegas Nevada. I am very much interested is obtain any recording by Rusty. I was a member of the Driftwoods when we recorded “Cold Shot” and “Helpless”. Once, after I came back from Vietnam, Rusty came to my home in Los Angeles and played a tape recording of a re-make of Elvis Presley’s “Trouble” which was tremendously fantastic. Nevertheless, how can I obtain these recordings from you? Do you have any photos of the Driftwoods?

  4. Hi Mark, Thank you for your comments on the record. It is certainly worth remembering. I have to be honest I don't think heard of your band the Thrill. If you would like to email me a story and photos about the band I will gladly post it up on the blog. After all that's why this little blog was started. It's my humble attempt to remember the artist who created the music. Have a good evening
